Prev / Coco's Bar Next

My first day on the Thai island of Lanta (Ko means "island") I wandered into Coco's beach bar. The island was still a week or two away from the start of peak season, so it was very quiet and relaxed for the two or three patrons in the bar. The owner was chipping away at a large hollowed tree trunk, converting it into an equally-large chair to match the similar chairs, couches, and tables scattered about the outdoor patio. What made the bar particularly nice (in addition to the great yellow curry - my first in Thailand and it was true to form) were its pair of "sea eagles" that perched on various precipices around the area. Before their appearance, the owner laid out large fish in strategic locations easily-visible from the air, and then made a very strange whistling noise that I cannot emulate audibly, so textually is beyond consideration. Soon enough the large birds dropped out of the sky upon their easy prey.
